Synopsis
Crews and Reese investigate the murder of a Zen Master who was buried alive ten years ago. Crews continues to investigate his own case, and finds some proof that his partner's father Jack Reese could be involved.
Notable Moments
- It's a tiny thing, but I love Charlie's face while he watches Professor Desjardins when they first meet. Reese's, too.
- "No, thank you. We're working, and one of us is a recovering alcoholic." CLASSIC.
- Charlie leaving a white horse on his ex's lawn. Well, it's not actually there. But it certainly looks like it is.
- Reese's face when Crews starts phone-flirting with the lab tech. Screencap, pls!
- Their entry into the party is hilarious, from Crews telling Reese he bought his ex a horse to the "this isn't dating" comment later on. Fabulous. The timing, the expressions-- everything is perfect.
- Constance going to visit Charlie at work, and she's all dressed up. Oh, can you count the levels of inappropriate? Also, worst DA ever.
- I like Lt. Davis being very clear with Daddy Reese about how they'll conduct the Ames investigation. Good for her.
- Charlie asking the corpse what he'll do when he finds the man who killed his friends... it's so quiet, almost a throwaway moment in the episode-- but an enormous question, indeed.
- Amy's last line about why she killed Master Chang (because he thought he could leave her) makes her a good deal less of a sympathetic character for me.
- Lab tech kissing Charlie, then handing him Jack Reese's records and saying "I'll call you"-- brassy and fun. I hope we see her again.
- I like the dreamy/tinny alteration of "Gimme Shelter" while Charlie is realizing exactly who Kyle Hollis is. Nicely done.
- I get such a shiver every time they show Charlie going back to the prison. I'm probably oversensitive to this.
Quotes!
Crews: I'm not here. You like that, don't you?
Reese: If only that were true.
Crews: What would you come back as? Reincarnation. Don't limit yourself-- you can choose an animal.
Reese: This one time should be plenty. Thank you.
Crews: I'd like to come back as a giant Flemish rabbit. 15 pounds of pure bunny. Or a whale. Can you imagine being a whale, thousands of feet under water? Can you imagine that?
Reese: Is it quiet down there?
Crews: See that car... not here. That building... not here. Not actually here, just more like it to be here than to not to be here. That dog... not here. That girl... not here. Too bad about that. This street... this city... everything... not here.
Reese: If you're not here, how come I can still see you?
Crews: Also, and I might be wrong about this, but I think people were having sex in that house.
Ted: Charlie, I'm not Robin, am I? You know, Batman and Robin? Trusty sidekick?
Charlie: Like in tights? No, Ted. You are not Robin...
Things We Learned
- Charlie's no longer a suspect in Ames's murder.
- On the day of the Bank of LA shootout, not only was Jack Reese the leader of the SWAT team used, but that team just happened to be training in the one building where a sniper could get a clear shot into the bank.
- Jack Reese's registered informant was Kyle Hollis.
- Kyle Hollis's last arrest was in 1995.
Wall of Conspiracy
No wall, and nothing new placed in the pile despite new things learned. Building the wall is, I think, done. For now.
Fresh Fruit
Apple, when Charlie comes home to find the white horse in his living room.
Music from the Episode
"Ride," Liz Phair
"Ooh La La," Goldfrapp
"Fleur de Saison," Emilie Simon
"Hello! Hello! I'm Back Again," Shivaree (a Gary Glitter cover)
"Gimme Shelter," The Rolling Stones
"Perfect Disaster," Caution Cat
Questions for Discussion
Ted: Robin, yes or no?
Constance: your take?
The case: how did you feel about it? Interested? Not? Wanting it the heck out of the way so we could get to mytharc?
Completely superficial question: why is Dani's hair down when she goes into the party? Do you think they did it just because she has gorgeous hair (which, IMO, a valid reason)? I can't see the character caring if she blended into the party or not...
Only one more! Dive in with your comments, thoughts, additions to the episode guide, and most of all, have fun!

Now, THAT's a big bunny.
I think the case of the week in the episode kind of falls apart at the end (not a big fan of "so he wouldn't leave me!" murderously hysterical woman reveal) but I didn't really care that much because I loved pretty much everything else -- the partnership interactios23293., the Ted bits, the flirty lab tech, the arc advancement, the horse...
One throwaway thing I particularly like in Crews & Reese interaction in this episode is the fact that they are now comfortable enough in their partnership to poke fun at each other's sore spots. So you have Dani mouthing "prison number!" to the lab tech and Charlie making that crack about one of them being a recovering alcoholic, and it's not something nasty and mean, but a fodder for banter. They are pretty at ease in each other's presence and that makes me happy.

Here you go:
Hah. The way Charlie's face just falls! These two are so fun together.
Charlie asking the corpse what he'll do when he finds the man who killed his friends... it's so quiet, almost a throwaway moment in the episode-- but an enormous question, indeed.
Oh, man, yeah... that scene, so short but it packs a lot. We've seen his investigation but we've never really seen Charlie mourn. To other people the Seybolts were just another murdered family but they keep forgetting that to Charlie, they *were* family.
His stake is far more personal than 'just' the wasted 12 years of his life.
Completely superficial question: why is Dani's hair down when she goes into the party? Do you think they did it just because she has gorgeous hair (which, IMO, a valid reason)? I can't see the character caring if she blended into the party or not...
Maybe they were trying to play it low key? Like in Fallen Woman? Maybe Dani thought that if they'd gone, cop style things would have gotten out of hand and it would be harder to haul the two guys out with all the people scrambling like mad to get away.. On the other hand, maybe they just really wanted an excuse for Dani to put her hair down.
Love that Reese and Crews have the same 'Ookay' reaction after the kiss. They managed to make that not as gratuitous as I thought it would be.
Also, I love that this time Reese plays along with Charlie's 'She's shy' thing. They enjoy interrogating a leeeettle too much.
And, hah! Dani, you are such a liar. Sure, you've never been to a party like that before!
Ted: Robin, yes or no?
No. He's definitely an Alfred. I don't think Reese would appreciate being associated with Robin. I think she'd be more like Batgirl III *is geek*

hm. I always thought more of Ellie Satler.

I did like Dani's little smirk as she sized her up though.
March 26 2008, 18:53:56 UTC 4 years ago
Also, you're right about what she did. I felt it really didn't go with her character at all (even though the backstory I feel is significant, it does no justice to her lack of character development, in my opinion.)
Something totally unrelated... what font is that on your header here? I've looked around dafont.com and myfonts.com and plugged it in... but came up empty handed. Thanks!

So may good parts
… the flirty lab tech This is picky but why didn’t they at least say hello in the elevator? Why is she helping him and when did that begin? Like her a lot and hope she returns.
Loved Reese and Crews interaction, “…I would have been taller,” image of Ted as Robin, Crews on physics, reincarnation and the contrast of the serious Crews who identified with a crisis of faith and and understood Eric (…crushed who I was and allowed a new me to step forth) with Crews having fun observing a wild party.
The Hair. Just seems out of character for Reese to let her hair down while on duty. Like merging two different sides. Unless maybe its an excuse to safely revisit the old days
The Dress. Didn’t seem like something a professional DA would do to say the least. Constance seemed almost desperate to get Crews attention. Why?
The Horse. Great gift on surface but showed how angry he still is at his ex. Like time stopped for him in prison, so the divorce is still new to him and he has to learn to deal.
Fun episode

I bet that, on their way in, somebody stole Dani's hairband or whatever she was using to hold it up...she looks at Crews and says dryly, "now it's not there." ;D
Ted: not Robin...the butler, maybe - a very distant maybe. (can he be Bruce Wayne? he is, after all, the one handling the money)

Although, if it had to be someone from the Bat Crew, maybe I would choose... hmmm... I really have no idea, but none of anyone has mentioned. *shrugs*

As for Constance, this was totally a low blow, rubbing Charlie's face in the fact that he's not the one that she's going out with. She really does get more and more desperate for his attention, it's quite sad, really, and I think it's the main reason why I've always been turned off by the character of Constance. I'm fascinated by the Constance/Charlie backstory, and she must be a strong woman to have won Charlie's case, but she comes off as a terribly weak and needy person when she's around Charlie. Blech. I really wish that this character was better developed and could be a separate entity from Charlie. She's the only character that doesn't have her own identity. There's so much that could be done with her, like showing the turmoil in her marriage that Charlie has caused, maybe have her trying to salvage her marriage since Charlie can't give her what she wants. Anyway, I adore Dani for not approving of Constance's stunt. There is definitely a tension between Dani and Constance that I really hope gets explored in season 2. You can tell that Constance doesn't like Charlie having such a beautiful partner, and Dani doesn't seem to approve of Constance bringing her relationship with Charlie into the station (and after the dress thing, she probably thinks that Constance is a bit desperate... or manipulative).

I laugh every time at how that's her being undercover, while Charlie does nothing but hide his badge.
At least she does try, Charlie's just bad at undercover, especially considering he's a minor celebrity with all the media coverage and the ongoing documentary.
She's the only character that doesn't have her own identity. There's so much that could be done with her, like showing the turmoil in her marriage that Charlie has caused
I truly hope this will be explored next season because if they plan to maintain Constance as a regular she has to have something more to offer than 'love interest'.
There is definitely a tension between Dani and Constance
There is tension there but I think they're both trying to be civil with each other even though they don't actually know what to do with each other and I think, Dani really liked making Charlie squirm (not like *that*!). I just bet she enjoys the times where she can actually mess with him.
